Google Plays Nice with South Korea
South Korea recently passed a law that requires sites with over 100,000 unique visitors per day, to require its users to provide their full name and national ID before posting videos and comments.
“We have a bias in favor of freedom of expression and are committed to openness,” said Lucinda Barlow, a spokeswoman for YouTube in [...]
Full StoryGoogle Thinks Vimeo is YouTube
Here is an item of interest that popped up on the CrazyEngineers.comm forum yesterday.
Google’s ever-so-handy translation tool thinks that Vimeo translates into YouTube. Competition is good, but bashing competition like this is well…actually kind of funny.
It’s a very subtle move.

Full StoryGoogle Getting Careless with Branding
Google is a company that I would expect to protect its brand, trademark, and copyright, but in a few cases, I have seen that they haven’t been very protective.
The first instance is GOOGLE.vc. This website is not owned by Google.
I’ve talked about this domain before and mentioned it to a number of Google employees, [...]
Full StoryCopyright Violations Go Too Far
Here is a great example of when copyright violations go too far.
Warner Music Group, the label for Death Cab for Cutie, asked YouTube to take down some videos because they were violating some copyrights.
Here is the result.
It was most likely accidental by someone on the band’s staff for the website, placing an unauthorized copy of [...]

Full StoryYahoo! Loves YouTube
As we already know, Google loves to include YouTube videos in the search results whenever possible it seems relevant. But something I noticed today, Yahoo! is also doing that.
Here is a quick look at how Yahoo! is doing it.
I want to think that Yahoo! would be sending traffic to their own properties, since their [...]

YouTube Spammers Unite!
After trying to do some legitimate research about Wordpress SEO on YouTube to check out some videos that people have made.
But alas, it looks like the search giant, more commonly known as Google, still hasn’t applied its huge algorithm to it’s video platform.
So what makes me think that? Keyword stuffing spammers make me think [...]

Google Hosts Online Advertising Meetup
Earlier this week on Monday, I attended an advertising meetup that was being hosted at Google NYC. A lot of people felt it was a sales pitch for Google products, but I had other thoughts. Full StoryYouTube Gets Another YouSuit
According to InfoWorld.com,
An Indian music label has filed a suit against Google and its video sharing site YouTube after the display on YouTube of content on which the Indian company says it holds copyright.
Super Cassettes Industries is seeking a permanent injunction and damages on the dissemination and display on YouTube of the content and on Monday obtained an interim restraint order in the High Court in Delhi. That means Google, which was not represented at the proceedings, has to remove the content until the final order is decided.
“We had communicated several times to YouTube and to Google both in India and the U.S. to remove the content that infringes our copyrights,” said Amit Sibal, lawyer for Super Cassettes in a telephone interview on Wednesday.
Big surprise? Certainly not. Some companies may be slow to draw their gun, but they will certainly draw it at one point.
Turkish Government Blocks YouTube Access
“The decision followed a complaint by a resident in the eastern city of Sivas that the site hosted videos containing insults against Turkey’s founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the army, the Anatolia news agency reported.” This doesn’t come as a huge surprise to me though. With China blocking FeedBurner not too long ago, so other countries blocking Google services is becoming a “norm” from what I can see. The Register has more details on what is actually happening here.
Full StoryThailand Lifts Its Ban on YouTube
Due to some content being hosted on YouTube, Thailand felt the need to completely ban the site from being accessed anywhere in Thailand. YouTube had agreed back in May 2007 that it would remove the offending clips, but it has taken this long to actually go through and filter through all of those clips. Thailand finally felt it was time to remove the ban on YouTube’s website access and allow its country to once again access this website.
Full StoryYouTube Rival Rounds Up Some VC Funding
There are still quite a few YouTube rivals out there right now, but very few that actually have a chance at seriously competing to the brand name of YouTube. Youtube rival Dailymotion has rounded up $34 million in venture capital funding to continue their progress and competition efforts.
Dailymotion currently ranks #50 around the world in today’s Alexa.com rankings, but it ranks at #8 for just France. YouTube boasts #4 worldwide, but trails Dailymotion at #9 in France. YouTube started their international efforts last June with their emerging services to Europe. YouTube will need to be even more aggressive if they want to capture the European market.
Let’s Get Ready to Rumble! Viacom vs. Google
The next step in the copyright infringement wars has begun. Google (YouTube.com) is being sued by Viacom for “massive intentional copyright infringement” for the content being hosted on Google Video and YouTube.com. So what is the motivation behind these lawsuits from Viacom? Making money from content they do not own. That is basically what it all comes down to. Google (YouTube.com) is making millions, if

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has forced Google-owned YouTube to remove video clips of last weekend’s Oscar broadcast. Is the Academy hopelessly out of touch or just making a smart business decision? Technology reporter Rachel Rosmarin and media editor Peter Kafka squared off on the Digital Download, a blog dedicated to the day’s must-read tech stories. Here’s what they had to say. The test will allow publishers to receive syndicated clips of NBA games and other content, paired with advertising and served by Google. In May of 2005, the NBA declined a partnership with Google. The dies have changed and the NBA has now opted to
Full StoryYouTube Traffic up by 15% Despite Viacom Take Down
Even after the take down of content by Viacom, YouTube still managed to bring traffic to a strong 15% gain. During the week of February 3, YouTube’s traffic surged above the combined traffic to all of the television network websites. This is a landmark event in the changing face of web traffic and entertainment consumption, now that entertainment seekers are now more likely to go to YouTube than
Full StoryYouTube/Google & CBS are Talking
The two companies had been closing in on a multi-year deal, the paper said, citing people familiar with the matter. The companies also discussed ways to peddle CBS Radio advertising spots to Google advertisers, the paper said. This is going to be a great move for both CBS and Google (YouTube). CBS will probably get compensation in the form of royalties on a per view basis, some sort of long-term payment, or possibly an exchange of services. Since Google has access to a lot of radio advertising now, this could be a great opportunity for CBS to gain better radio visibility. The details have not yet been released, but I suspect they are will be released sometime this week.

Sequoia Capital, the sole venture capital backer of YouTube, received 941,027, valued at about $442-million. YouTube was bought out less than two years after being founded for $1.65 billion; by far the largest buyout in Google’s history yet. The executives and the VC (venture capital) firm were not the only winners though, many of the employees also received part of the acquisition money.
Full StoryYouTube’s Whack-a-Mole
On Monday, even as YouTube was removing clips owned by Viacom Inc. to meet the entertainment conglomerate’s demands from last week, those same clips were popping up on Google’s own site, called Google Video. Since Google acquired YouTube not too long ago, they should be considered as the same company as Google. Viacom Inc. may not be looking at Google Video yet for the copyright infringement, but they should be. YouTube was much more popular than Google Video 6 months ago and probably is still more popular, but that shouldn’t dismiss the fact that they have copyrighted videos too.
Full StoryGoogle’s YouTube Loses Content per Viacom
This just came in from Reuters, but Viacom, which operates MTV and Comedy Central, has asked Google’s YouTube to remove a lot of their copyrighted videos. Viacom said its pirated programs on YouTube generate about 1.2 billion video streams, based on a study from an outside consultant. That’s a lot of content that YouTube will be missing soon. Let’s see how it plays out in court if it goes that far.

The long awaited anouncement from YouTube.com has arrived to share revenue with users for their hard work. “In terms of paying users revenue against the content that they are uploading, we definitely are going to be moving in that direction,” said YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland over the weekend. The mechanics of the revenue sharing system have not been disclosed. Smaller video sharing

Full StoryGoogle video being sued this time
Google Video is the target of legal action this time. SAN FRANCISCO — Google Inc.’s on-line video service has been sued for copyright infringement, providing a possible preview of the legal trouble that may plague the Internet search leader after it takes over YouTube Inc. and its library of pirated clips, the company said Wednesday. Seems like the video search industry is taking a big hit. Google is
Full StoryGoogle Wins YouTube.com Ownership
The Chicago Tribune writes on the antitrust approval for Google over YouTube.com. The antitrust authorities were investigating the recent sale of YouTube.com to make sure it was in compliance with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The approval paves the way for Google to buy YouTube, leapfrogging it to the top spot in online video sharing. The acquisition also gives Google a way to tap the Web video advertising market, which will generate $1.1 billion in U.S. revenue in 2008, up from $385 million this year, according to market researcher EMarketer Inc. Google has been a long way away from being the Internet leader when it comes to broadcasting videos online. This purchase will attempt to recover those loses and once again take ownership of that lead.
Full StoryBest Invention of 2006 @ TIME
TIME Magazine has announced its 2006 best inventions. What else could you possibly think to name the best invention of 2006 than the one and only, YouTube.com. It’s been an interesting year in technology. Nintendo invented a video game you control with a magic wand. A new kind of car traveled 3,145 miles on a single gallon of gas. A robot learned to ride a bike. Somebody came up with a nanofabric umbrella that doesn’t stay wet. But only YouTube created a new way for millions of people to entertain, educate, shock, rock and grok one another on a scale we’ve never seen before. That’s why it’s Time’s Invention of the Year for 2006. Technology is blazing ahead at an
Full StoryUTube.com Sues YouTube.com
UTube.com is suing YouTube.com for a couple of different reasons. First, all the traffic they have been getting and that they haven’t been able to handle it. Second, the police have been contacting them about hosting copyrighted videos — but that seems easy to clear up as they are in two completely different industries. It seems that the only reason UTube.com is coming out of the woods right now to sue is because YouTube.com cashed in and has a lot of money now. There’s really no trademark violation they could sue over and really no substancial evidence for any case at all. I don’t see this case going anywhere in court. More at TechDirt.com.
Full StoryGoogle Tries to Find YouTube Suppliers
Chief executive Eric Schmidt and other managers have met CBS, Viacom, Time Warner, NBC Universal, News Corp and others, say people familiar with the talks, offering tens of millions of dollars in upfront payments for the right to broadcast their video content legally on YouTube. Google obviously wants YouTube to be a success since they spent $1.63 billion on the website. They are putting every effort into making sure
Full StoryYouTube: Viacom Speaks Up
NEW YORK (AdAGE.com) — Last Friday, Jeff Reifman received a letter from YouTube, noting the video-sharing site had disabled some material he’d posted—a couple of video clips of “The Daily Show.” Mr. Reifman, a former MSN exec who lives in Seattle, wrote about it on News Cloud, an open news website he founded. And that set off the firestorm. YouTube.com has been getting hit pretty hard lately with copyright infringement
