Free Google Wi-Fi in Your Home

The chore of tapping free wireless networks like Google’s in Mountain View and MetroFi’s in downtown San Jose for your home network just got a little bit easier. Ruckus Wireless in Sunnyvale announced its latest version of the MetroFlex, a WiFi in-home connectivity gadget. The MetroFlex uses antenna technology to receive the wireless signals and make the networks more accessible and reliable from inside the home. When Free is Not Good Enough

Some activists are taking charge and crying about the free Wi-Fi in San Francisco. Last year Google and Earthlink won a joint bid to provide free Wi-Fi access to San Francisco but some want to put the clamps on the deal and start over. Seems that there are more readily available Wi-Fi options that are faster for the city, but Google and Earthlink have already agreed to partner on the deal. Some activists are complaining that their slow Wi-Fi is not fast enough and they want a faster connection. But wait, excuse me, isn’t it being offered for free? Yes, last I checked, the Wi-Fi was free with provided advertising on-screen. Would I take free Wi-Fi if I was given it? Sure, if I knew it was secure and with Google behind it I know it would be. People should complaining and be more grateful for what they’re given — for free.

SanFran Opts for WiFi

San Francisco, Google, and Earthlink have all joined forces to create what quite possibly could be the largest wireless network in all of history. Under the proposal, EarthLink — one of the nation’s largest Internet service providers — will build and maintain the wireless network. Google plans to buy bandwidth from EarthLink and then offer a free wireless service to residents. Google, doing what it does best, wants to offer it for free. That free, however, will be paid by ads. Each browser will have advertising embedded in it to cover the costs of providing free WiFi. Personally, I wouldn’t care at all if there were ads in my browser for free WiFi — as long it was consistant WiFi. This is a huge branch out for Google from their hometown WiFi network and it will expand the coverage for AdWords even more. Mercurynews.com
