The Chrome Video Codec Change

Last week, Google announced that their Chrome browser will no longer support the H.264 codec. The primary reason being that this codec is only freely available for next couple of years. After that, it will be a licensed codec — there’s no longetivity with that strategy. Google has taken the hard, but better route and [...]

Online Playback System with a Community Bias

Yahoo! has their work cut out for them. Google, even more so. Yahoo! recently registered a patent for an “online playback system with community bias.” This looks to me like an attempt to re-innovate Yahoo! Video to create a feature that tops YouTube. The new idea behind this patent for Yahoo!, I believe, is one [...]

Google Partners with Buy.com

Google recently launched video chat for Gmail. But, you obviously cannot have a video chat without a video camera. So Google has generously offered some links through Buy.com to purchase a camera. Google Video Jumps in Bed with the Dow Jones

Seems like a lot of companies have been sleeping around, but this is the latest couple to get together — but rather we should call it a party in the pants since there are a few companies involved. Google Inc. is working with Dow Jones & Co. Inc., Conde Nast, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and other large content companies to syndicate their video content on other Web sites, the

What is Wrong with Google Video

Something I’ve never noticed with any other video sharing site is something that I noticed today on an actually pretty funny video. I noticed the timestamp was wrong. A flaw that could be overlooked very easily, but something I noticed and it really stood out to me. I was watching the video to see how much time was left and I noticed it went 7 seconds over the allowed time it said. It’s not a huge deal by any means, but something they should be looking at fixing sooner than later.

YouTube’s Whack-a-Mole

On Monday, even as YouTube was removing clips owned by Viacom Inc. to meet the entertainment conglomerate’s demands from last week, those same clips were popping up on Google’s own site, called Google Video. Since Google acquired YouTube not too long ago, they should be considered as the same company as Google. Viacom Inc. may not be looking at Google Video yet for the copyright infringement, but they should be. YouTube was much more popular than Google Video 6 months ago and probably is still more popular, but that shouldn’t dismiss the fact that they have copyrighted videos too.

The Unlisted by Google Video

The Google Video Team got the call, they answered. What did the people want? They wanted to be able to upload videos, but make them private — sort of. Google Video has responded with the “unlisted” option that will now allow for people to upload videos and make them not searchable. This means you can only give your friends or family the link. It’s helping create a more sense of privacy for the entire community. Unlisting videos is easy. All you have to do is check the “Unlisted” option when uploading your video(s) at http://video.google.com/videouploadform. You’ll then get a unique URL that you can email to anyone you want – and no one else. Google Video

Google to Acquire YouTube.com at 40%?

Michael Arrington on Techcrunch got an email recently talking about how Google might be acquiring YouTube for anywhere between $1.2 – $1.5 billion. I am very skeptical at this move and I doubt it will happen. I don’t feel that Google needs to make a move like this to stay in the ball game. Yes, YouTube does have a huge head start already as far as userbase goes in video submissions, but Google — on the larger scale — as the better overall user database. If Google could push a bigger promotion for user submissions, such as with a contest offering cash prizes or something like a trip to Google, it could easily take over the lead and become number one without buying YouTube.

Google Video Lectures

Google Video finished up an agreement with the UC Berkeley to offer courses via Google Video. Berkeley is the first university to have its own Google Video page. Initially, the university has put up a library of more than 250 hours of video for public viewing. Most of it previously was not available online, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said. News.com So what kind of affect does this have on the way learning can be done? It changes everything. While you still can’t get a degree just from watching these videos, it does allow for people to become more informed and better educated even without a degree. For those people that once could have not had an education or teaching to this degree, it has now become a viable opportunity for them.

Google Video Adds Caption Capability

Google Video has added caption capability to the platform which will allow video producers to add in the captions and have them appear on Google Video’s site. This stuck out to me and I thought this was worth sharing, …it’s particularly meaningful to me because I’m not only an engineer fortunate enough to work on Google Video — I’m also deaf. Ken Harrenstien It’s amazing to me (at least) to see someone with a handicap doing such great things. It’s not everyday you see someone with such courage to overcome what has happened to them to go on to do bigger and better things. I probably won’t ever be an engineer for Google nor do I ever plan on going deaf, so I give Ken my up most respect that he has accomplished all that he has already and continues to do more.

MTV Talks to Eric Schmidt

Google and MTV have had some talk amongst themselves and came up with an agreement that will allow for MTV shows to be streamed on Google Video. AP released this news just two days ago that Google Video would start streaming over 100 hours of footage from Laguna Beach. This initial streaming of this show will be a test to see how functional and how adaptive the Google Video Network can be for MTV and to see if it will be successful or not. I have no doubt that MTV will continue using Google Video as their hosting content provider since Google Video is one of the largest video networks in the world now. While YouTube and similar providers are still up there, Google Video has been leading the path for paid videos and content of that type.
