How Fast is Your Site? It Will Soon Matter.
During Pubcon Vegas, Matt Cutts hinted at a potential new algorhiym factor for 2010. Site speed.
For sites that already do this, such as this one, there’s nothing to worry about. But for those sites that taken 30 seconds+ to load, you really need to begin considering caching and other like functionality to speed [...]
Using Trends to Predict the Economy
Google is a powerful company, there’s no doubt about that. Google has access to some of the most valuable data in the world because of search tracking. It’s able to use search data to show trending of what’s being searched and therefore, can predict events like Black Friday.
It’s truly incredible to see what [...]

Porn Now Part of Universal Search
Universal search is a great part of Google. It gives users depth when they are searching, providing results for latest news items, image results, video results, and of course, the basic web results.
Up until today, I had seen everything was clear of porn…but it seems that has changed.
Looking at the screenshot below, you can [...]

Google Adds Jump To Links Within Results
Here’s something new that I haven’t seen before. After doing a search, I saw there was a link within the description of the result. Digging deeper into the result, I can see that it’s part of the navigation on the result page itself.
This is going to yet again, change how people build pages [...]
Full StoryGoogle Is Smarter Than You Think
Google is getting smarter and smarter, everyday. Faster than you may realize.

All Your O Belong to Us
Yesterday was a weird day for consumers of Google. Typically, when there is a custom Google logo, it’s for a birthday or a special event. But this time, it’s left everyone confused and weary of why Google would do such a thing.
When clicking into the page that Google led users to, the first [...]

Full StoryGoogle.VC Owned by Google Now
I reported a little over a year ago that google.vc was not owned by Google, and how surprised I was that Google would let something like that slip through the cracks.
Somewhere in the past 12 months, Google took over the domain and now it’s an official Google domain.
Google Changes Its Logo Size
Today, right before my eyes, literally, the Google logo size changed and they added more space for search results on the sides. Phillip reported on this a day or two ago, but it seemed like the change was only for him. I tested in IE, logged in, logged out, Opera, Safari, any browser [...]

How Fresh is Your Content?
Matt Cutts in the video below, describes how Google [and googlebot] determines freshness of content.
As a short recap of the video, dates on-page and in the URL are not indicators to googlebot of how fresh your content is, but rather it’s based on both the first time that googlebot visits your page and how often [...]

Here is the problem that Brent, an SEO [...]

I can only assume that the data [...]

No Celebration for President’s Day in the US
This is something I actually find a little odd. They celebrate artists, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Holloween, and everything else under the sky, but Google is not celebrating the day of all our past presidents.
Google cannot try to hide behind the “we are not political” line, we know Google is quite forward with politics and [...]

Most recently, Firefox, after having been in bed with Google for quite some time, is shopping around for a new [Russian] partner. According to Mozilla’s bug tracking system Bugzilla, there is a bug request to change the default search partner from Google to Yandex.
This is all despite Mozilla and Google having a long-standing partnership [...]
Google Loses Mobile Search Deal to Microsoft
In recent news, Verizon chose Microsoft over both Google and Yahoo! as its search provider for its mobile devices.

Google Celebrates Birth of Marc Chagall
I actually had to look up this one to find out who Marc Chagall was, but alas, another painter.

Here is what it looks like.
Google is Still Just a Baby
Google is showing a maximum results of 25 billion and 270 million results (25,270,000,000) right now.
Is Google’s search index really that small? It’s nothing to be ashamed about, but com’n, show us more results.
And yes, I know, those 25 billion results are being pulled in a fourth of a second. Slow? Certainly [...]

Return of the 404
A couple of months ago, I reported that google.com had a new 404 page, trying to suggest alternate pages when returning a 404 page.

So what makes me think that? Keyword stuffing spammers make me think [...]

It’s that time of year again, another PageRank update. Google started exporting their PageRank values to the public.

Google Respects Authority More Than Anything
This may be like beating a dead horse, but I feel it’s a point that should be brought up again.
It’s becoming more and more apparent that Google trusts authority more than anything with its algorithm. Right, of course, this is obvious. But, what I want to look at today is how Google actually shows [...]
Forbes on Microsoft’s aQuantive Acquisition
Forbes published an article this morning that talks about how Microsoft’s acquisition of aQuantive, made a year ago, could have a serious conflict of interest in the industry of search and paid search.

Quite quickly too, in fact.
Google announced on this past Wednesday that they will be splitting off [...]

The Google Web Server has updated its 404 returns now. Before, it would simply return with a “that page is not found,” but now it turns useful information.
