PageRank Update 2008

PageRank Update 2008

There is a public PageRank export happening today, with definitive confirmation from Matt Cutts.

But please note, PageRank is updated everyday internally at Google, this is simply the public facing number that is updated. You aren’t going to see a massive jump in rankings or a massive decrease in rankings because internally, your PageRank is [...]

Hackers Stealing Your PageRank

John Mueller of Google Zürich wrote a pretty enticing article about PageRank and PageRank hi-jacking.
Here is a quick excerpt from the beginning of his article,
A different angle of attack is to redirect only search engine crawlers to a different site. By doing this, they can make it look like the pages of a website moved [...]

PageRank Update for April 2008

PageRank Update for April 2008

It’s that time of year again, another PageRank update. Google started exporting their PageRank values to the public.
So what does this mean for you? Absolutely everything nothing! Google’s rankings will not change drastically because of this export. Google is internally updating PageRank on a, well, probably a daily basis.

Google Toolbar PageRank Updates 2008

The “word” of PageRank certainly does spread like wildfire around here [in the Blogosphere]. First Barry, then Loren, all sparked up by a few forum threads.

So we’re back to talking about PageRank, yet again. We talked about links and pagerank a couple months ago, so actually, it hasn’t been all that recent.
But looking [...]

Google Supports iPhone Unlocking

Google Supports iPhone Unlocking

I have discussed Google and Apple’s mutual love for each other already, but this one comes as, well, only a little bit of a surprise. The surprise comes in the form of an AdWords advertisement I noticed in my Gmail.

Apple has already come outrightly and stated that they will fight the unlocking and discontinue any support for those people that do unlock their iPhones. But Google is more than happy to take advertiser’s money in lieu of Apple’s position?

Bring Out Your Dead…Bring Out Your Dead Links

Bring Out Your Dead…Bring Out Your Dead Links

Old school Link spamming building is dead. You can no longer simply put up completely irrelevant links and hope you get link love for them.

As illustrated in the comic above (which is thanks to Monty Python and the Holy Grail [one of my favorite movies]), we can see how traditional old school link building is dead.
The old style of link building was “Hey! You have a PageRank 8 site, that must mean it’s [uber] trusted by all the search engines! I’ll give you $100 if you put my link there. K? thx!” That is no longer the case. Search engines have been smarter and better.
But from what I can tell, a lot of people are still stuck in the 90s and think that irrelevant linking still works. Let’s take a look at what I’m talking about.

PageRank Knock-out Round 1

As one of my co-workers was cruising around this morning, he realized that SERoundTable.com is now a PageRank4. As I looked around, I also noticed a number of other sites that were hit. SEOPedia.org and SearchEngineJournal just to name a couple. But looking around at other similar sites, they rank just fine. Seems that this PageRank hit is really only effecting the public numbers as the search rankings still seem to be just the same as they used to be yesterday.

SES 2007: Are Paid Links Evil?

Session Panelists
Matt Cutts – with Google
Michael Gray
Todd Malicoat
Greg Boser
Andy Baio – with Upcoming.org

This session was the highlight of the conference for me. I believe there are valid points both ways; pro-paid links and anti-paid links.
As just about anyone knows, Matt Cutts represented Google and his stance is that paid links are evil. Why does he feel this way? Matt brings up points about Google that they can’t condone or encourage paid links — and in fact hates paid links — because it manipulates the search and doesn’t provide natural search results, such as what Google really wants.
He gave his normal arguments for his side, as he started the session.

What Will Happen to PageRank

PageRank™ is part of how Google figures out what to show you in the results pages after submitting a search query. For example, when you search for “American government,” on Google, it will use PageRank as part of the formula to decide which page it’s going to show you as number one or number two, etc. There has been a lot of chatter among the SEOs and the

Google’s Creepy Crawlers are Back

Google’s Creepy Crawlers are Back

As I reported back in December 2006, Google’s crawlers weren’t being very crawly at all. Things have changed quite drastically from that point. This is the same site that I discussed in my previous article on the crawl rates. Comparing the two charts, you can visibly see that the crawl rates in December of the site were down to only 600 pages per day being crawled.

Google does not Own PageRank

After doing a little patent research, the research returned a little information about how the technology buzz of PageRank is actually not owned by Google. So who owns the technology behind the big Google Search? Stanford University. (Patent #6,285,999) The patent details show it was filed in 1998 which does seem wrong to me, but the earlier date shows it was registered in 1991. Quite interesting to me that Google would base their entire search market on a key element that they do not actually own themselves. It may have been conformed into their own patent, but the original idea behind it belongs to Stanford. Bearing in mind that Larry Page did co-author the patent, it still does not belong to Google.

Google: 1 Kinderstart: 0

As Kinderstart.com sued Google in July of 2006, they were fighting because Google set their PageRank to a zero which dramatically dropped off their search rankings. So the question and legal dilemma came up of whether it was wrongful of Google to do that to Kinderstart.com.
The judges ruled. Google’s algorithm ranking with PageRank has no legal binding of public service that Google has to support. Google has the right to delist and de-PageRank any site they want to for any reason they want.
What it all comes down to is that what Google provides to the public, Google Search and the other bajillion services and products, is free of charge. There is no warranty, there is no guarantee, there is no policy saying it will last forever. What Google offers to everyone is for free use and a … well, a nice gift. Google sends thousands upon thousands of hits per day to my sites … FOR FREE!

Yahoo! Offers Backlink Badges

As Yahoo! tries to gain more webmaster popularity, it has released a Backlink Badge display for webmasters. You can choose and pick which badge you want, but this is something that Yahoo! has that Google is being sluggish on. Maybe Google won’t come out with it ever, but maybe they’ll play catch up on this one. Google should release a pagerank display because there are tons of sites out there that offer it, but this way it would be easy to offer and not require any sort of API key or hacked up PHP. http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/badge

Google API Madness

Some of the webmaster products [tools] include the Webmaster Central portal, Analytics, AdSense, and AdWords.
There are APIs already for AdSense and Google Maps, but there are a few APIs which Google is missing. Many products that are created by other companies rely heavily on these APIs that are already in place because Google provides such a unique service to everyone. Okay, so what’s the point of this article? There are a couple APIs that Google is missing.

Selecting Your Preferred Domain: www vs. non-www

Google Webmaster Tools (formerly Sitemaps) is now offering an additional tool which will tell Google what your preferred domain name is. I do it on most of my sites so that way PageRank is not lost anywhere. Now you can easily tell Google what you actually do prefer. Take a look at the help center for more details.

07/13/2006 — Another Bites the Rank

PageRank Explained PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts
