reMail announced today that they are being acquired by Google.
So what is reMail?

Gmail Now Uses https by Default
The Gmail blog announced yesterday that they were moving to default https access for Gmail users.
I’ve been using this feature for quite some time just because I’m a little anal with security.
Here’s what Gmail Engineering Directory, Sam Schillace, has to say about it:
In 2008, we rolled out the option to always use https — encrypting [...]
Automatically Translate Emails Within Gmail
BAM! Gmail Labs now offers the capability to translate emails on the fly, without leaving your email.
Check out the screenshot below to see what I’m talking about.
If I had been reading up the official blogs earlier in the day, I would have, oh wait, no, it wasn’t posted until late tonight. HA! [...]
Full StoryBetter Gmail and Calendar for the iPhone
Earlier this week, Google launched enhanced versions of both the Gmail app and the Calendar app for the iPhone.
Google is going to the extra mile for Android phones, as I expect they would, while they are keep legacy support for the iPhone to specific versions. “Please note, these web-based mobile products are only available [...]
Gmail Celebrates 5th Birthday
Google’s email product, Gmail, turned 5 years old yesterday. I remember the first e-mail I received was from the Google team. It’s the same exact e-mail you get today for creating a new Gmail account.
It’s been a long and quarky road, but it’s been a fun road. Gmail has made some huge [...]

Today’s April fool’s joke was turning on Autopilot for Gmail. Here’s a glimpse at what it looks like.
Respond to business proposals:
Manage relationships:

Honestly, I felt last year’s Gmail April fool’s joke was a lot better. This year, I’m actually disappointed. I feel like they set the bar so high last [...]
Full StoryThe Gmail “Whoops” Button
Recently added in the Gmail Labs, you can enable the option to “undo” an email you just sent. This is not like the AOL feature that was around 10+ years ago that actually let you retract emails sent to other AOL users, but rather this feature waits 5 seconds before actually sending the e-mail.
So [...]
Full StoryCan We Continue to Trust Google?
Google offers a wide variety of services. Gmail, Search, online office collaboration, and a number of other services that are commonly used by millions of people around the world.
Is it becoming to much for Google to handle? Despite having 20,000+ employees still, even after the “let goes” of 10,000 temporary employees, Google [...]
Gmail: Upload Multiple Files at Once
Here’s a new trick that Adam Ostrow of Mashable noticed. You can select multiple files instead of having to select file by file.
To do this, just click the “Attach a file” and you will see this popup window to browse your files.
NOTE: To make sure you have the new feature, log out and [...]

The Father of Gmail
Andrew Warner, a friend of mine, was able to get a few minutes with Paul Buchheit, the father [and founder] of Gmail. Buchheit talks about innovation and where you can really gain leverage on a new industry or an already-existing industry.
Andrew has a ton more of these great interviews over at Mixergy.com, so check [...]

The tasks feature also works on domain-hosted [...]
Gmail Offline
The latest from Gmail Labs is being able to access Gmail while you’re offline. This has been a huge concern for me for quite some time, which is why I’ve used an e-mail client as both a back-up and a method to access my Gmail while it was unavailable.
Gmail Labs has come out with [...]
Full StoryGoogle Toolbar Marketing in Gmail
Gmail has helped revolutionize what e-mail is and how it operates. Through Gmail, Google has changed the way people experience and interact with e-mail, and for that, I am thankful.
But one thing that still bugs me is the way their product marketing managers do not communicate.
The Google Toolbar is a great toolbar, one of [...]
Get Some Gmail Stickers
Google is giving out some Gmail stickers to help you more easily use the Gmail web interface. Also as just a fun thing to do (despite having laid off 10,00 employees, they still have a lot of money.)
Pretty cool stickers if you want the spend the 84 cents to mail a letter and a [...]
Full StoryGmail Calendar Widget in Gmail Labs
There are a number of cool things in Gmail Labs right now, but here is a short review of one specific labs product that I think is really useful.
Above is the description of what this nifty little labs product can do. But let me show you what it can really do.
Full StoryIronic, Lively is Dead.
I find it ironic that a project named Lively is, well, dead.
Google announced that they are shutting down the beta project called Lively.
Here’s a short excerpt from the post about why it’s being shut down.
That’s why, despite all the virtual high fives and creative rooms everyone has enjoyed in the last four and a half [...]

Google Partners with Buy.com
Google recently launched video chat for Gmail. But, you obviously cannot have a video chat without a video camera. So Google has generously offered some links through Buy.com to purchase a camera.
As far as I can tell after looking at the links (in the source view), they are clear HTML clears. No [...]
Gmail for Mobile 2.0
Google has introduced Gmail for Mobile 2.0, the next generation of Gmail on your cell phone.
Here’s a quick glimpse of what it looks like,
Here are a few key features I would like to highlight about this release.
Available in 35 languages
Basic offline support
Multiple mobile email drafts
Multiple account management
I’m personally still going to continue using my mail.app [...]
Full StoryGoogle’s Competition Beating them at their own Game
Google’s Gmail service has been a revolution to how web-based e-mail works. Not because of AJAX, but because how easy it is to use.
Zoho, a competitor to Gmail, announced today that they are moving out of private beta and into the public eye. Here is a little excerpt from Zoho’s website about who [...]
D.C. Government Drops Microsoft for Google
Bloomberg recently released an article that talks about a deal between the US Washington D.C. Government and Google, valued at roughly USD$500,000. The deal, for the government, means that its 38,000 employees will soon be using Google e-mail, Google Docs, and everything else Google related.
This is a huge upset for Microsoft, but I can [...]
Gmail Now Offers 7gb of Storage
Today, Google has officially reached the 7gb mark for storage in your Gmail account.
That’s right folks, 7gb for you to use for files, emails, even just storing spam if you want to! Whatever floats your boat or melts your butter, you can store it in Gmail now!
And yes, I know I reported on this [...]
Full StoryGmail Close to Offering 7gb of Storage
Gmail is closing in on the 7gb mark. Google started this “infinity+1″ initiative way back when in April 2005. As that “infinity+1″ has gotten bigger and bigger, storage is now almost up to 7gb.
Google made an announcement for added storage already back in October 2007, but it’s still been growing, even for the [...]
Google Listens #2: Google Gmail Contacts
Case number two of when Google listens to the public. Which, I have to say, is pretty pathetic that this is only second case I’ve written about where Google has listened to the public and made a change. Look at Flock, for example, they listen, listen, listen, then change, change, change.
Enough about that [...]
Stanford Chooses Yahoo! over Google
In the latest breaking news about Stanford, Google, and Yahoo!, Stanford has opted to utilize Yahoo!’s Zimbra to power the university’s web-based email and calendar interface, according to a report released yesterday. Zimbra was acquired by Yahoo! in September 2007 for USD$350 million in cash.
This is a pretty low blow to Google because of [...]
New Gmail Account Security
The Gmail team rolled out a new feature which will is helpful for security. It’s not a drop in the bucket that you’ll never get hacked, but this is a great tool that will let you know who is logging on to your account and from where, using which protocol.
Aside from being able watch [...]
Full StoryThe Gmail Team Can Hear You
Sometimes it’s extremely hard for a big company to hear listen to the everyday users, more commonly known as the little people or better yet, you and me.
But alas, Google has a team the really listens well. The GMail Teams listens, then it responds.
Among the other hundreds, if not thousands, of support pages available [...]
GMail Offers Recycling Tips
For some odd reason, I hadn’t noticed these before, but GMail offers recycling tips. If you have recently viewed the trashcan, it will sometimes show you a recycling tip.
GMail has been known to offer similar for other boxes such as the Spam box.
Listen to Mp3s Within Gmail
One of my friends send me an mp3 to listen to and I noticed there was a “play” button next to the mp3 file.
Turns out that Gmail does not only let view .doc files, .html files, .xls files, and all the other office extensions, but it also let’s you play mp3s directly within Gmail. [...]
Eco-Safe Paper vs. Gmail Paper
Today in the Twittosphere (hmm is that a word? guess it is now) I noticed there was some talk of Eco-Paper, aka, PDF files.
This made me think, “hey, what about my Gmail paper? I still use that service!” And now I’m wondering, why would such a small company dare think about going against [...]
Gmail Chats with AIM
Recently, the Gmail team has released a new feature that will allow you to chat with AIM buddies, removing the restriction of only Gmail/Gtalk buddies.
A great feature release and it will help make Gmail more of a communication tool. The next step is launch more features to be able to reach people through other [...]
Full StoryGmail: Muting or Ignoring Conversations
Gmail quietly released a new feature. “Muting or ignoring coversations.”
Issue: You have an on-going conversation with half a dozen other people that keep using reply-all (and secretly, you do not even care about the conversation). So what do you do to ignore the conversation but still keep record of it? Mute it!
Keyboard [...]
Gmail – Go Go Gadget Invisibility!
Gmail quietly added a feature to Gmail chat over the uneventful weekend. In case you want to see who’s on, but you don’t want to be seen, now you can!
Gmail chat now lets you go invisible so you can see people, but people can’t see you. This is great if you’re at work [...]
Matt Cutts on Gmail Feature Requests
Matt Cutts has thrown out the net for requests of what people are looking for feature-wise in Gmail.
I put in my request last year for Gmail Templates, I really hope they move forward with it.
Maybe this is how Google gets some of their best features (for free), they just ask us.
Gmail’s Love for the iPhone
Gmail has launched a couple new features.
They decided to move to a more fluid design and feel to gmail. “To do that, we decided to use AJAX–a powerful set of web development techniques that make web pages more responsive. We also implemented two of the coolest and most requested features for this release: pre-fetching [...]
Google Seeks to Capture Mobile Market
Google released the iPhone interface for Google Apps products. “During Christmas (when nobody was at work!) iPhone browsing numbers even surpassed Symbian – which holds 63% of the world smartphone market – compared to the iPhone’s 2%. ComputerWorld.com”
The surge in traffic to Google from Apple’s iPhone is very encouraging for iPhone users around the [...]
Gmail Spam Search
Seems that Gmail is having some spam issues right now. Specifically speaking, in the search of Gmail. From what I can tell, Gmail is returning results from a search that include spam messages as well. I thought Google was good at fighting spam? Maybe I am mistaken there. Seems like spam would only clutter the search results and defeats the purpose of even using the search function.
Full StoryThe Untold Gmail Stories
Some of the untold Gmail stories, in a single clip. Here’s a quick wrap-up from some Gmail software engineers.
Full StoryWonky AdWords Ads in Gmail
I’ve been getting some wonky ads here and there within Gmail. I know it’s a character set issue, but shouldn’t Google have this resolved? AdWords is the creme of Google’s crop…so you would think they would want it functioning 100% all the time. Odd to see these kinds of character set issues appearing.
Full StoryGmail 2.0 [Beta]
Gmail is getting better, better, and better! The Gmail team has announced they released the new Javascript back-end rewrite which has made significant efficiency increases. One of the biggest updates to the new code release is the enhanced contact manager which is now a big part of the Gmail interface. A feature which has been requested time and time again by people is to offer IMAP support
Full StoryGoogle Mail (Gmail) Now Offers 4GB of Storage
The news around the blogosphere is true. Google’s Gmail service now offers 4GB+ of storage to everyone. I’m a little late reporting this because I don’t even use the Gmail interface anymore. I stopped using it a few months back because I got stick of leaving it open in my browser. I just connect via Thunderbird now and I’m quite happy with it.
Full StoryGoogle Group Chat for Gmail Released
The team powering Gmail has done it again. Another great release for our Gmail needs. Google Group Chat. Gmail and Gtalk users may now interact with group chats with other users. It’s well, just like a chatroom — for Google users. Do you have a need for a multi-user conference or just want to chat with some of your friends while you’re at work? Now you can. Here’s a quick preview of what it looks like:
Full StoryGoogle Wishlist: Gmail Email Templates
As something I just noticed as I was getting ready to send out some e-mails to family and friends is this: there’s no way to save an e-mail as a template and send it to a bunch of people. When I use Thunderbird (which I do love) for my 10+ e-mail accounts, it has all of the goodies with templates being one of them. Something that Gmail is definitely missing. I know I’m not alone on this one, but it would be great if Gmail introduced a template feature so you could save an e-mail and resend it as many times as you want. Have a suggestion of your own? Send a note to the Gmail team about it!
Full StoryGmail Introduces Gmail Paper
Something that comes along as big as this, it’s just something I couldn’t pass up writing about. While yes, I am sitting in a hotel room in Singapore, I saw this new update to Gmail. The new feature that Google has released for Gmail is the Gmail Paper feature. What exactly does it do? Gmail Paper will physically mail you a copy of the letter you request.
Full Storythirty ways to get more out of gmail
Some great tips by Kaly that had I no idea about. I installed a few of the scripts even. Figured why not since I use Gmail every…single…day.
Full StoryGoogle to Fight for Gmail.cn
A legal source told Reuters that Google was trying to buy the Internet domain name, held by Beijing-based ISM Technologies. It resembles Google’s internationally known e-mail service, gmail.com, and the colors in which the two logos are written are similar. The “.cn” suffix is commonly used for Chinese domain names. Google recently began offering free Gmail accounts in China to promote its brand. Another nasty trademark battle for Google.
Full StoryWhy Gmail is Better
I have heard a lot of conversations floating around both here on campus and around the blogsphere.
Since all these new web-based mail services are available, what makes Gmail so much better than the rest?
AJAX Navigation
Anyone else have a fear of refreshing the page? Sometimes I do. Okay, not really, but the AJAX features of Gmail are amazing to me. Google brought AJAX to the front line where Microsoft created the actual language almost 10 years ago (actually dated back to 1996 with Internet Explorer 3’s IFRAME). Gmail and Google Maps made this language very popular and then it was termed by Jesse Garrett in 2005.
AJAX: Asyncronous Javascript and XML. The AJAX interface for Gmail makes it easy to move around and not have to refresh the page everytime you want to go somewhere. That’s what I really hated about Hotmail and AOL. Well, AOL is a whole different story which we don’t have time for, but let’s focus on the pitfalls of Hotmail. It was very bland and flat. Too much advertising that was in your face and it wasn’t very effective as a friendly web-based e-mail client.
Gmail has revamped the normal interface and given it some spark.
Gmail Opens to the World
Gmail has officially opened to the world. “In keeping with our tradition of Gmail holiday announcements — Gmail was launched on April Fool’s Day — we’re inviting everyone worldwide to share the love this Valentine’s Day,” said a Google spokesperson. “Good relationships require good communication, after all, and we think Gmail is a great tool for staying in touch.” What better day than on Valentine’s Day? A relationship-bearing day, one filled with love and emotion. I can honestly say that I love Gmail and I have an emotional attachment to it. If I didn’t have Gmail…well, let’s just not go there please. Gmail has revolutionized the webmail culture and pushed it beyond borders. A congratulations is in order for Google.
Full StoryHOWTO: Backup Gmail with Thunderbird
Lifehacker takes the gold for this one on how to backup your Gmail account with Thunderbird. I probably should be doing this too, but I actually use Gmail as my backup system for my other e-mail addresses mostly. I do have about 6 e-mail addresses I use in Thunderbird, but Gmail isn’t one of them.
Full StoryGoogle Considers Google Spam
As I was going to clear out my Gmail spam box last night, I noticed something odd. I label all e-mails from *@google.com with the label ‘Google’, so I know who it’s from. This is what I saw last night: A little odd that Google would consider its own alerts spam. I’ve never marked anything from Google as spam so this is a bit odd to me.
Full StoryGoogle Loses Gmail Name in Europe
Google’s Gmail trademark just suffered a severe blow in Europe as the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market has ruled against the search giant’s use of the Gmail name there, according to the man who opposed the mark. In short, Google will not be allowed to use the trademark Gmail within Europe. I’ve noticed already that UK residents use e-mail.address@googlemail.com instead of gmail.com as the domain. Gmail.de has some more details about it. This is a huge loss for Google because of how much they have already marketed the Gmail trade name across the Internet. While Europeans and UK residents already know it as something else, it’s still a loss to which Google could have had total ownership of the trademark name across the world.
Full StoryGmail Tips: Gmail+
As you may have noticed, I’ve started a little collection of “series” articles where I will write about a specific topic. Such as SEO Tips or the Firefox Extension Reviews. So here’s the start of the Gmail Tips series. This tip is focused on your e-mail address specifically. There is an easy way to organize your e-mails coming into your Gmail inbox without even using filters.
Full StoryGmail: Download All Attachments
I received an e-mail a few days ago with a few attachments. A powerpoint presentation and a Word document. After waiting for it to do the virus scan, it came up with a “Download all attachments” link. So I clicked it and sure enough, it had zipped up both files and let me download both of the files as one. That’s a sweet little feature that it can automatically compress attached files into one and on the fly let you download it.
Full StorySome Success, Some Failure
Google has a huge list of products on the market right now which are utilized everyday by people. Some of these great products include AdSense, AdWords, Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Calendar — just to name a few of them. But not all of these have been a success.
Two huge success stories include the AdSense+AdWords platform for advertising and the second is Gmail. These products have honestly changed the way the world of the Internet actually functions. AdWords+AdWords brought a new kind of advertising to the table and let small-time publishers start earning a few bucks here and there. Gmail re-invented AJAX — which Microsoft created nearly 15 years ago. AJAX lets a user check for new e-mails without ever leaving the page. This AJAX technology blew up and became widespread across the Internet. The technology wasn’t new, but not many people knew about it until the release of Gmail.
Gmail Accepting Outlook Invitations
Gmail recently started accepting Microsoft Outlook invitations. I had this invitation sent to me from Outlook 2007. Google is just one step closer to integration with Microsoft Office products. Does Microsoft see this as a good or a bad thing? We can only wait and see what Microsoft does in response to this kind of integration.
Full StoryFeature Highlight: Gmail thumbnail previews
This is another cool feature within Gmail. When sending or receiving an image as an attachment, Gmail will attempt to create a preview of it inline the e-mail. This is extremely useful to me in case I don’t want to spend time downloading an image if it’s huge or if I just need to see something real quickly. For smaller images, it actually just shows the image right there inline with the e-mail and doesn’t even create a thumbnail for it. This just another cool feature of Gmail. Plenty more to come!
Full StoryNofollow’ed my e-mail
Recently in Gmail, I’ve noticed that the e-mail addresses have been nofollowed. I’m still unsure why Gmail would want to nofollow e-mail addresses. Are they afraid Googlebot will break into Gmail accounts and start indexing the e-mail contents? Really weird to nofollow e-mail addresses in an e-mail, if you ask me.
Full StoryGtalk status in Gmail
Browsing some some more of my Gmails, I noticed another small addition. You can now see someone’s status on Gtalk within the Gmail interface. This is pretty nice for easy communication. It really seems like Google is utilizing Gtalk a lot more with Orkut and now Gmail. EVen before though, you could talk to people with Gmail, I really don’t think as many people were using it as there might be now.
Full StorySome new Gmail designs
If you’re a regular user of Gmail and notice the small things, you should have noticed the latest update to Gmail — with the details design feel. Below is a screenshot of what it looks like.
Full StorySneaky Gmail Features
Yet another cool feature I hadn’t noticed before either. The “Select ALL” feature is nice. They finally added this feature to the spam folder because it was taking entirely too long to delete all the spam (I had, at one point, over 5,000 messages in my spambox.) I really like this feature as well for spam. It takes a little bit longer to do than just delete, but it makes my life a lot easier. This feature, for inbox conversations, also makes life a lot easier. Something to note, it only seems to show up when you select all of the inbox messages in the current page.
Full StoryGmail Keyboard Shortcuts
Are you into the keyboard shortcuts like we at Ginside.com are? Then you need to check out these sites. First we have the official Google Support list of all the Gmail keyboard shortcuts. And secondly we have a print-friendly version of all the shortcuts. What are my favorite shortcuts? cntrl + s (to save) and “c”, I use the “c” one a lot to compose mail.
Full StoryGmail and Docs Become Friends
Gmail and Docs become friends recently. When receiving an XLS file as an attachment, it offers an easy way to open it with Google Docs. This is the start of what we will soon see as service-wide integration of all the new products. The JotSpot acquisition, the Writely acquisition, and I’m sure we will have much more to come from these new “office” products. Google is trying to create a completely integrated system for users to make it easy to use. They are doing just that and they are doing a great job of it.
Full StoryGmail / Google Reader Integration
There is a nice little hack out there for Greasemonkey which will allow you to integrate Google Reader feeds straight into Gmail now. This isn’t just for Firefox though, there’s a plugin for IE as well. Thanks lonut.
Full StoryTalk to GMail About It
GMail now has the voicemail functionality which will allow you to leave voicemails for other GMail members. How do you even get the voicemail to another user? Google Talk. Google Talk’s voicemail feature allows your friends and contacts to send a voice message to your Gmail account. Voicemails show up as special messages in your Inbox, where Gmail’s built in Flash voicemail player lets you listen to them without having to launch an external application – just click the Play button in the conversation view. This looks a lot like it might even be moving to a corporate platform style to where you can easily integrate voicemails, email, calendars, and more, all into one platform. Outlook already has the feature to integrate into phone systems and listen to voicemails over email, similarly now does GMail.
Full StoryGMail to Google — Time to be Notified
Google has replaced their Mac version of GMail notifier with a product called Google Notifier which now integrates both Google Calendar and GMail together. The Google Notifier is an application that shows you alerts in your menu bar, so you can see when you have new Gmail messages or upcoming Google Calendar events without having to open a web browser.
Full StoryMultiple Google Accounts
A few weeks ago I logged into my AdSense account and it asked me to change my login, so I did. I thought it was a little weird at first because I liked having all my Google Services linked to one account. Since that time though, I had to change my login for AdSense so it uses another Google Account. I now have 3 different logins,
Full StoryDown Boy Down! Well, GMail that is…
Looks like GMail has been having some problems lately. On top of not being accessible for part of today, it now is not receiving new emails properly. As I tested it by sending an e-mail to myself, I still have not received it … now being 20 minutes later. I know that I had previous emails sent to my account as well from a couple hours ago. So either they’re really delayed or they weren’t delivered at all. I hope someone fixes GMail soon though, it’s a great service and I really hope it continues to grow and be successful. UPDATE: As I just got an email, I checked the time. It was sent 3 ½ hours ago, which means that mail is really delayed right now. I hope it’s corrected by this evening.
Full StoryGmail Goes Dotless
GMail goes dotless, well, in email addresses that is. From: Jonathan Dingman Mailed-By: gmail.com To: my……email@gmail.com (Yes, this is you. Full StoryGMail — Your Local Virus Smasher
Submitted by Caleb: I was playing around with the eicar anti virus test string and I attempted to send an email in gmail with that string in a .txt attachment. I’d never actually seen what happens when you try to send a virus, so i thought it might interest you. I tried sending a virus to my gmail account with another account and it didn’t go through (nor was it returned). I tried it with .txt, .jpg, and .wmv extensions. (via)
Full StoryGMail: Apply New Filter to All Results
As I was browsing around on GMail today, I noticed something that looked a little new to me. Almost everyone has created a filter at one time or another, but this is something new that I saw. So when I started playing with it a little bit more, I really liked the feature. This could very well be a really old feature, but I thought it was cool and wanted to make sure I wrote about it. It’s really nice so you don’t have to go through and then search after creating the new filter — it does it for you.
Full StoryNew GMail Feature: Time to Delete That Spam!
GMail has has released a couple new features, but we’re highlighting the new ‘Delete All Spam’ feature. I have been waiting for this for QUITE some time now because it’s a pain to have to go through all the pages in order just delete my spam box. If you look top right of the image below, you’ll see my average spam level. This new addition to the GMail platform will help increase productivity and save all of us just a little more time. The GMail platform has become very nice and I’m looking forward to the new product ideas that come up. I was thinking about it the other day and I don’t even remember what my hotmail addresses are anymore, or even any other web-based email account that I have — except GMail. GMail has truly revolutionized the world of webmail and I’m glad it has. (via)
