Google Shuts Down Froogle

Froogle first started out as froogle.google.com, which later moved to froogle.com. Froogle was first invented four years ago. During this past week, Froogle sadly put up the white flag and dis-membered from the Google family. Visiting froogle.com will now lead you to google.com/products. I have to say that I am quite sad that they closed Froogle. I was — and still am — a huge fan of Froogle, even if it doesn’t exist anymore. It was an awesome search engine powered by Google that was great for shopping. I honestly don’t understand how anyone would get confused to what it was actually meant to do. But alas, Google has decided to shut down the product search engine and replace it with a blander “Product Search” instead. We can’t honestly say that we didn’t see it coming.

Some Success, Some Failure

Google has a huge list of products on the market right now which are utilized everyday by people. Some of these great products include AdSense, AdWords, Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Calendar — just to name a few of them. But not all of these have been a success.
Two huge success stories include the AdSense+AdWords platform for advertising and the second is Gmail. These products have honestly changed the way the world of the Internet actually functions. AdWords+AdWords brought a new kind of advertising to the table and let small-time publishers start earning a few bucks here and there. Gmail re-invented AJAX — which Microsoft created nearly 15 years ago. AJAX lets a user check for new e-mails without ever leaving the page. This AJAX technology blew up and became widespread across the Internet. The technology wasn’t new, but not many people knew about it until the release of Gmail.

Now Up, Froogle, With a Disappearing Act

Rob points out at DigitalPoint that the Froogle link from the Google homepage has disappeared. I’m quite surprised that they removed this link since Froogle still isn’t that widely marketed. I use Froogle for quite a few things, but not everyone knows about it still.
