Matt Cutts, a Google extradinaire, wrote up an article talking about Chrome’s privacy settings. How private is your data? …and is Google becoming “big brother” by collecting your data?

This is all explained by Matt in his article.

Here’s a short excerpt by Matt in his article.

I like that you can manage Chrome’s communications settings in a centralized location. I don’t consider features such as phishing protection or DNS pre-fetching to be worrisome, but it’s nice to give easy controls to turn features on or off. I don’t expect that will stop people from mistakenly repeating that Chrome is somehow scary or has privacy issues, but for the people that care enough to do the research, they’ll be happy to find out that Chrome lets you choose exactly how and when Chrome sends data to the outside world.

I also have to note, I’m a huge fan of Google Chrome — despite being a Firefox-lover. Chrome is amazingly light-weight and easy to use. Definitely worth checking out.

Google launched its browse, Google Chrome, on September 1st, 2008.

It’s been 24 days, a little over 3 weeks, since then. So what have we learned about the browser?
<a href="http://www.ginside.com/content/2008/09/google-chrome.jpg"rel="lightbox" >
Here are some thoughts of what I’ve had.

I have to admit, I have not been using it full-full time, all the time, but off and on. I’ve been slowly trying to integrate it into my browsing while on my Windows machine, but it’s tough. I normally use a Mac, so it’s rare I’m on a PC (except to play games once in a while).

But I’m actually writing this post on my PC (wow, it’s been a while since I’ve done that).

So back to Chrome.

Chrome is a lot more impressive than I had originally thought. One feature I really like is the “password saving” feature. Normally, under Firefox or Opera, the browser will ask immediately proceeding the “enter” of a form, asking to save a password. But Chrome seems to be smart enough to know when a login was successful and if you really want to save the password.

Obviously if you enter the wrong password, you’re not going to want to save it because it’s wrong. But Chrome seems to have resolved that issue with how it handles the password saving.

Another aspect of Chrome I am truly impressed with is how fast it is. Not just browsing the web, but also switching between tabs. The browser feels a lot more agile and responsive than either Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Opera — which I use all three regularly for browser testing and cookie sessions.

A third and final note about Chrome that I love is the ability to resize text areas. In a <textarea> form, you can resize it to whatever size you want, giving you better visibility in what might be a limiting experience to begin with.

Google still has a lot ways to go with this browser, but it’s definitely a good start and going in the right direction.

Here’s a gallery of Chrome photos that I put together.

So after a day of using Google Chrome, I have to admit that I’m really happy with it. A lot of people are moaning and groaning that it’s “not the next IE killer.” Okay, so what? So what if it’s not an IE killer? Does that mean you should turn people away from using a great browser? No, it doesn’t.

Google Chrome is a great browser. As one of my co-workers notes, “it’s really fast.” Indeed, it is really, really fast. With a brand spanking new JavaScript V8 engine, it certainly is very fast.

This new Google browser is taking browsing to the next level. Since Google Chrome is based on the WebKit engine and Firefox is based on the Gecko engine, they are by nature, very different browsers.

I overheard a conversation that “this is just Firefox 4.0″ and how the two browsers are so similar. But that is the farthest thing from the truth. Sure, they both have tabs. Sure, they both render CSS. Sure, they both let you use Google. But if you look at the bare bones, they are not the same browser.

Firefox is still it’s own beast and Google is happy to support it for the next three years. But, Google Chrome is ready to take a piece of that market share away from Mozilla, Microsoft, and Opera.

I’m a happy Chrome-user and I’m eager for a Mac release of the product. I’m using Chrome under a VM for the time being.

What are your thoughts on Chrome? Likes? Dislikes?

Google is…wow..man they’re efficient at getting products out the door and marketed.

After doing a few searches, we can clearly see that Google wants to get the good word out about Google Chrome. But alas, even searching from a Mac, Google AdWords will still show up — so AdWords cannot yet decipher between operating systems for advertising.

Searching for a pretty broad term, “web browser,” Google is already showing up as the first hit for the ads.

Needless to say, Google wants a piece of the market for browsing, even though it means competing with companies they already work with. Recently, Google extended the Mozilla+Google contract until 2011.

But this is not where Google wants to stop. Google maybe has world domination of its sleeve, but we will soon see if it happens or not. Alright, I was just kidding about that, they don’t want to take over the entire world, just most of it.

But hey, that’s more advertising bucks for them. I’m alright with that, that’s business.

The browser name? Google Chrome.

So what will make the Google Chrome browser better than Firefox, Safari, or <del>Internet Explorer</del> Opera? “On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple.”

“We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers.”

Is this a from-the-ground-up written browser? Nope.

We owe a great debt to many open source projects, and we’re committed to continuing on their path. We’ve used components from Apple’s WebKit and Mozilla’s Firefox, among others — and in that spirit, we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward.

Google is pulling in all sorts of resources for this one.

Check back soon, Google will be posting more about Google Chrome shortly.

But, at the Firefox Plus Summit, the contract has been renewed for another three years.

Here’s a quote from the post, “…the introduction of the browser concept series, developer releases for Thunderbird, and video moving into the browser via Firefox 3.1.”

Video moving into the browser via Firefox 3.1? Hmmm sounds like another way to drive more views to YouTube through the ever-so-popular browser.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Better video integration is coming to a browser near you, soon!

So stay tuned for future updates of Firefox and how Google can become even more integrated into the browser.
