Google Launches High-Speed ISP

In recent news, Google has announced the launch of their new high-speed ISP.
We’re planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
…
Like our WiFi network in Mountain View, the purpose of this project is to experiment and learn. Network providers are making real progress to expand and improve high-speed Internet access, but there’s still more to be done. We don’t think we have all the answers – but through our trial, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to the shared goal of delivering faster and better Internet for everyone.
There are two very large issues I see with Google offering this king of service.
The first issue I see, and by far the larger issue at hand, is network infrastructure. There are physical lines involved in offering this kind of service that AT&T, Verizon, Quest, and all the other ISPs, already have in place. Should we expect to suddenly see Google Fiber trucks roaming our streets laying new fiber? Or how exactly does Google expect to be able to lay down that much cable to service anyone at all?
The second concern I have is security. When you visit a webpage, the DNS you are using knows about which site you are visiting. When Google launched their own DNS, I was just as concerned about security as I am with this. If Google were to have access to this kind of data, it becomes even more scary to how much access they have to data and what they will do with it.
Here’s a video about the network.

Thanks for this post, I didn’t see a lot of buzz about this until I decided to hit up your site.

Thx Frederick! It’s a decent idea for them, I’m just really concerned about how much data Google has access to, it’s scary.
