Google Believes in Education

As we have seen time and time again, Google is a strong supporter of education. Google cares so much about education that as part of the interviewing process to even be considered as a potential Google employee, they ask for your GPA records.

Google recently announced the 2009 Google Fellowship recipients.

After careful review, we are proud to announce the 2009 Google Fellowship recipients:

  • Roxana Geambasu, Google Fellowship in Cloud Computing (University of Washington)
  • Michael Piatek, Google Fellowship in Computer Networking (University of Washington)
  • David Sontag, Google Fellowship in Machine Learning (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

  • Han Liu, Google Fellowship in Statistics (Carnegie Mellon University)
  • Lixia Liu, Google Fellowship in Compiler Technology (Purdue University)

Why does Google care about education so much? I believe they care about education so much for a couple of different reasons.

First off, education is really important to both personal and professional growth. Google cares about people as human beings and not just employees. Google’s entire success is built on people. The world famous Google search engine, the AdWords product for advertising, Google Maps, and every product that they use, depends on human interaction. The smarter people become and the more they grow, the more likely they are to know which tools are best for them — and Google’s hope is that they will want to use Google’s toolset.

Secondly, if Google can help support students at an early age, this brings them into the “Google circle” that they will more likely be a supporter of Google in the future. This brings us back to the Microsoft story of how they offered software early on and now good portions of the world uses Microsoft; the same can be true for Google. Adopt early and have headway later in life.

I would like to say a huge congratulations from us here at Google Inside, for a job well done and that each individual would have much success in life.
