Google to Develop its Own Router

You may or may not be aware, but Google has a very, very complex server setup. Google has dozens of data centers and thousands of servers to offset the massive load from visitors hitting google.com everyday.

The way Google has its servers setup is that they are not physical machines as we would normally think. They are completely isolated. You get a motherboard, some RAM, a hard drive, a CPU, and an Ethernet port.

Google has been rumored to even be developing their own motherboard now that utilizes as 9-volt battery as the power supply, making Google an ever greener company.

Google has been using Juniper for quite some time now for all their router needs, but just like anything else within Google technology, they are finally coming to a point where in-house development is going to be more cost-effective than outsourcing.

In an effort to save energy and costs, it makes perfect sense that Google would want to develop their own router and switch system. As google.com is ranked among the top 3 visited websites in the world, you need instant transactions to be taking place to deliver the traffic where you need it go. I’m sure Juniper’s routers get the job done [obviously], but apparently Google thinks they do the same job — but better.

Looking at Juniper’s stock today, it doesn’t look like the rumor hurt Juniper at all. They are still hovering around the price of $18 as they were last week — if anything, their stock went up today.
