Google has a huge opportunity to gain market share with the G1 Android phone.
In a short and simple sentence, open up an app store that will let developers create essentially whatever they want.
Saul Hansell of NY Times’ Bits touched on Apple’s huge down fall. Transparency.
John Gruber wrote this very clearly last month:
Here is a complete list of what Apple must do to increase developers’ trust in the App Store system:
- State the rules.
- Follow the rules.
This is where Google could play a larger role. If Google was to open an app store that allowed just about anything, made the rules clear, and obeyed them, they would be able to tap into a specific portion of the market.
Google would obtain a lot of developer’s attention, creating a number of new applications, in turn, eventually making the G1 more functional.
That is Apple’s largest down fall right now, accessibility and transparency.
