Google Chrome for Mac “Soon”

Scott Knaster, on the Official Google Mac Blog, laid out all the details as to why all of [us] Mac users were stranded yesterday after Google Chrome was launched [only for Windows].

I can’t explain it any better than Scott can, so I’m going to only highlight a few points I feel are important to this blog post.

  • One overriding goal we have had from the start has been to build the best browser we can.
  • In order to make sure Chromium feels right, each platform’s version is being built by people who live and breathe that platform; the engineers working on these versions are long-time Mac and Linux engineers who are just as picky about the details as anyone.
  • We wanted to make sure that the user experience was very smooth for Windows users as well, and when you’re hashing out and testing ideas it can be helpful to not have to do so on three platforms simultaneously.
  • Right now, both are in the “pieces build and pass tests, but there’s no Chromium application yet.” While we’re working hard and fast on catching up to the Windows version, we’re not setting an artificial date for when they’ll be ready–we simply can’t predict enough to make a solid estimate, and we expect to learn a lot from the Windows public beta as well.

So they aren’t really saying exactly when the Mac release will come, but I’m hoping it will be sooner than later.
