Someone close to the deal has reported that Facebook raised another $50 million.
Who is the mystery company behind the $50 million? You.
A little weird, but let’s take a look at this.
Facebook has this little application called “gifts” and it lets you send gifts to friends. Every once in a while there’s a free gift, otherwise each gift cost $1.
Wait, seriously, $1? Why would anyone waste $1 on a stupid little icon that you send to a friend that is completely meaningless. (Please, don’t think I’m cold hearted, gifts are cool, but seriously? $1 for a stupid icon?)
Here’s how they raised $50 million.
I’m using a little bit of guesstimation work here, but let’s look at the numbers.
Below, you can see about 24 different gifts on a single page, one page out of currently 23 pages of gifts — totaling 532 gifts.

So based on those 24 gifts on this single page, you’re looking at about 3,000,000 gifts @ $1 each, so somewhere in the range of $3,000,000 for just the single page of gifts.
Multiplying those 24 gifts ($3,000,000) times 23 pages of gifts OR taking the average supply of each gift, which is 130,000 items available for each gift, you can do something like 130,000 x 532, which actually comes out to closer to $70 million, but this is purely based on a lot of guesstimation from these pages of gifts.
So, needless to say, why on earth are people paying $1 for stupid icons??? Seriously, if you’re going to spend a $1 on a stupid icon, save the dollar and go give it to someone that really needs it — maybe someone that is homeless or needs food.
Please, please, please, stop buying the stupid icons for $1!!!! </end_rant>
Sorry for the rant, it just frustrates me to see money wasted on stupid things.
Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday now :)
