A couple of months ago, I reported that google.com had a new 404 page, trying to suggest alternate pages when returning a 404 page.
From what I can tell, it was purely just a test to see how the new 404 page would function and how people would respond.
Here is what it used to look like.

Google has since reverted to their previous 404 page, which looks like this.

Nothing major in changes, but it’s not suggesting any alternate URLs now. It’s simply a “hey, the page you’re looking for isn’t here.”
Less confusing to people? Quite possible. I don’t know the internal reasons that they tested the new 404 page and then reverted back to the original.
