As previously talked about today, Google’s Friend Connect is on the talk of the town already.
Facebook is getting ready to fight back against Google, sort of.
Facebook has very strict privacy policies, which is a great thing to have. However, because of these policies, Facebook is not comfortable with letting Friend Connect to use the Facebook platform.
In short, Facebook feels that using Friend Connect would give away too much information about users, despite it being an opt-in service, and that they require more controls in place for how that data is distrubted.
I completely agree.
Facebook has a very good point and I completely stand behind their decision for it. This is a huge oversight and Google should not let it go lightly.
Data portability is a great initiative going on right now, but data control and who has access to that data is equally important. There are a number of companies that stand behind and support the data portability initiative, but it is still something that needs more thinking-through.
I think it’s great that Google came out with these tools, but there needs to be better controls in place for who can access the data and where it’s stored.
