They have more storage than they know what to do with.What better use of it than to offer a free service to the public which will let them dominate the market even more.It will also help them capture a lot more data out there and remain as the "owners" of the data.Basically, just another service you can use Google for.But I could be completely wrong. But not very practical. As Amazon S3 is for couple of years on the market now. And take the price of the service in consideration too.
