New Search Algorithm for Yahoo?

Posted by jonathan at 3:52pm EST on 03/17/2008

Yahoo! filed for a patent last week which would allow the use of their algorithm to utilize personalized bookmarks as the “weight.”

This moves away from the general consensus of people voting through general links and it moves a lot closer to a social media style of generating results. Using personalized bookmarks to weigh how much of an authority any particular site is could be a good idea, but at the same time, it could be a bad idea.

Sure, Yahoo! already owns http://del.icio.us/ (with an Alexa of 490), which means they have the data already available. But the problem Yahoo! would run into using this style of results would be that not everyone uses delicious. I rarely use delicious, but I do, none the less.

They would need to find other methods of “bookmarks” to help calculate if they really want to utilize this style of results in the future.

Soooo, why exactly is the word ‘Google’ in the title of this article? What does this Yahoo! search patent app have to do with Google? Am I missing something? I *am* a little sleep-deprived right now, so I admit that my subtle-ometer might be flaky ATM.

Ha, thanks. I was really tired yesterday when I wrote this. I had originally thought the patent was for Google, then when I read it closer, I noticed it was for Yahoo!, so I had to change the title. Looks like I forgot part of the title and accidentally left Google in there.

I’ll change the title, thanks for the heads up Dougal ;)
