Google has proven itself as a strong supporter of many Open Source projects. This week, they officially announced their ties to the Wine application [Windows emulator]. Google has hired CodeWeavers to “make Photoshop CS and CS2 work better under Wine.”

Open Source

Dan Kegel of Google writes, “I work for Google, and part of my day job is to help improve Wine.”

So what is the motivation for Google to support these Open Source applications? For starters, Picasa. Google uses Wine to build Picasa for Linux. This is a huge motivational factor for Google. The better support Wine (and CodeWeavers) has for applications, the more Google can do for Linux.

As stated above, Google already has employees working everyday to further the support of Wine for Linux.

As a side note, it appears that Wine has moved part of it’s development efforts over to Google Code. Thank you Dan Kegel for updating us. Wine has not moved any development over to Google Code, but rather the information on Google Code is a hand-compiled list of links to winhq git tree. Thanks again Dan for the correction via e-mail.

Google does a lot of code sponsorships, so this is just part of its efforts. In other news, you can read about how Google supports Joomla! as well.
