Robots and how they read (or don’t read) images has always been an issue. Google[bot] is finally starting the trek which will take the world down a read of being able to search for anything, anywhere.
According to what Danny recently touched on, Google has filed three new patents: Recognizing text in images, Enhancing text in images, and Using extracted image text. This will help Google go beyond the already-existing Image Search that they have. For an interesting read, feel free to check out my SEO Tips: Naming Images article which talks about how the search engine works a little bit.
Danny has the full scoop, but here are some highlight points which I think are head-on with where the technology is going to take us.
- Improving local search, and showing images of the actual locations of businesses
- Providing images of other nearby businesses in a local search
- Showing alternative businesses near a location that may offer similar products or services during a local search or product search
- Picturing actual landmarks along a driving route
- Allowing for a wider range of keyword searches associated with businesses, and images of those businesses
- Enabling product searches associated with specific businesses at specific locations
- Allowing museums to be searched by keyword, or to be browsed
