What Grinds My Gears? Poor AdSense Tracking for Publishers

Something that’s really bothered me over the past year or so is that there isn’t sufficient support for AdSense tracking. Sure, you can hack your way around and track AdSense clicks through javascript and Analytics, but there’s no solid support for it.

Why does this bug me? Optimization. I really don’t know where my clicks are taking place exactly on which page. I can channel the ads, yes, but that only gives you the placement of it on the page and never which page or what number ad it was.

I have a content site with over 10,000 content pages that are produced dynamically on a daily basis with robust caching. Having that much content does not make it an easy task to monitor AdSense clicks to be able to optimize for the best CTR and the best value for the advertiser.

I’m not one that just puts up ads to generate revenue, but I’m really looking to make sure the advertiser benefits from my users and the ads being shown on my pages.

I really wish Google would step up and really add some AdSense tracking support either straight into Analytics or offer some alternative way to be able to really look at the traffic, where the clicks are going, what kind of conversion is happening, and many other thoughts such as those. Some serious traffic analysis, I think, would benefit both the publisher and the advertiser so that the publisher can optimize for the best value for the advertiser.
