Today there was an update for Counter-Strike. (yeah I know, “dang jonathan, you STILL play that game?”) Yes, I still play Counter-Strike, but I took a break from it for about three years.
But to the point. The Valve update today for Counter-Strike was an in-your-face update. Advertising is everywhere in the game now. Playing maps like de_aztec and de_dust2 it can’t be anymore obvious than it already is.
Google purchased AdScape for $23 million not too long ago and this is going to be a great way for Google to tap into the gaming business which has been, until now, untouched by advertising corporates like Google.

Hehe, I got you back in Counter-Strike. But I’m pissed about the games.

The ads, even.

I actually think it’s a good move though. The top ad is very annoying, but I think ads on the walls will be a great move for Valve.
I saw an article though that shows some research done that in-game advertising will prove to be less effective.
The only real means I can see in-game advertising acting as are brand image and mass marketing. Users are not going to want to click on an ad while they’re playing a game, it simply just won’t happen.
