University of Minnesota + Google Connection

As I was doing some research today, I entered in google.com/education to see if I could find some information on the research. To my surprise though, google.com/education actually forwards you to http://www.google.com/univ/education. That’s not the surprise though, the surprise is that it searches http://education.umn.edu.

That leaves me to only one conclusion: that Google and the University of Minnesota have some sort of relationship. If you have read about Google’s history at all, you will know that it all started at Stanford. I tried doing some more research on this connection specifically, but I came up empty handed.

I cannot find any tie between UMN and Google, but there just has to be some sort of connection. I cannot figure out why going to google.com/education would then direct you to search education.umn.edu. Why not stanford.edu? Why not ucla.edu? Why not yale.edu? Just a little bizare to me that Google would select UMN to be the default search.

IE7 cannot access google

Sidenote: This is real cute. I opened up IE7 to see if it acted the same when going to that page, but even further to my surprise, google.com/education would not even open up. That’s just spiffy that the page won’t even open in IE7 for me….nice, very nice.
