From what ZDNet.com writes on this one, Fedex has come to agreements with Google to create a package tracking tool using the latest Web 2.0 tools which includes Google Earth.
Right now, the program is still in the pilot phase to test it and see how functional it will be long term. Fedex will be including small radio devices on high-end packages such as diamonds as part of the pilot to see how effective it will be.
Adding this kind of functional tracking to their platform will definitely make them stand out from all of their competitors. Right now, the standard is delayed reporting on possibly anywhere from 2-5 hours of what the actual status of the package is.
Providing this kind of almost “real time” status reporting should be much more effective and beneficial for consumers, but that’s only if the pilot is successful and is pushed out into production.
