Google Under Attack from Microsoft

Google has been getting a lot of heat from Microsoft lately. Here is the most recent development in the industry.

“We believe competition is good for customers and the industry. That said, customers tell us that our solutions deliver the ease of use, reliability and security that enterprises need. This is validated in the strong reception we’ve seen to 2007 adoption and usage and by having achieved more than 90% enterprise agreement renewal in the fourth quarter of our last fiscal year. Our long history in meeting the complex needs of enterprise customers, a partner ecosystem that has grown 43% on the Office platform since last year and our current and future investments in the software + services arena will deliver even more flexibility to customers.”

““2. Google has a history of releasing incomplete products, calling them beta software, and issuing updates on a “known only to Google” schedule – this flies in the face of what enterprises want and need in their technology partners – what is Google doing that indicates they are in lock step with customer needs?” — Thanks Mary

Microsoft has been awfully quiet in the past six months about the office realm because, well, frankly they own it right now. Microsoft is still lagging behind with any mentionable product that is purely web-based, but they do have a strong grasp of the application market.

Microsoft Office is by far the most widely used office suite in the world. Microsoft will not easily be trumped, even by Google. Google does indeed have a strong influence on the world and how it operates — both consumer and business wide — but the idea of having your whole office suite online is still something that the world will have a hard time grasping.

For Google to really take hold of the market, they need to come out with something that will let users ease into the online use and make consumers and business associates more comfortable with the idea. I feel the world is still scared to take the next step of moving everything online.
