Goog-Daddy in the Works? Maybe.

Google and GoDaddy (and eNom) began a partnership almost one year ago. This partnership was a move to support the up and coming Google Apps. Google badly needed a trusted company to handle all their new domain registrations through the new program.

But as we know, Google is already their own domain registrar, so why did they want to partner with other companies? Well, I feel it has to do with exactly what I talked about above, a better “face value” to their domain registration process. GoDaddy and eNom were already reputable companies in the domain industry.

So why would Google be looking at GoDaddy as a future acquisition?

Andrew Allemann, editor of the Domain Name Wire blog and a self-described “domain name enthusiast,” suggested GoDaddy’s rabid filing of patent applications for search, VOIP, e-mail and domain technologies could make GoDaddy, which is known for its racy commercials featuring busty vixens, an attractive target for the acquisition-prone Google. — eWeek

This puts a lot of people in a bad position. Google would not only have access to all of the domain records that they’re indexing, but they would also have full control over them — whether we like it or not.

I feel this would be too much power for Google. If Google does indeed start to move forward with the acquisition, I have a strong feeling that the FTC would have to jump in to stop it from happening. I feel this way purely because Google would have access to far too much information that they shouldn’t have access to.

I have an article coming out later next week about Google and its information, so stay tuned for that.
