There are still quite a few YouTube rivals out there right now, but very few that actually have a chance at seriously competing to the brand name of YouTube. Youtube rival Dailymotion has rounded up $34 million in venture capital funding to continue their progress and competition efforts.
Dailymotion currently ranks #50 around the world in today’s Alexa.com rankings, but it ranks at #8 for just France. YouTube boasts #4 worldwide, but trails Dailymotion at #9 in France. YouTube started their international efforts last June with their emerging services to Europe. YouTube will need to be even more aggressive if they want to capture the European market.
Many portals and services that are successful in the US, can often fail very easily if they do not tailor themselves to the international markets and cultures around the world.
What does YouTube have that Dailymotion does not? Google. Part of being incorporated into Google has many advantages. Take a look at natural search and how seamlessly YouTube videos are now integrated into the organic search results. Anyone looking for a video can easily see that the result is a video and is very likely to be what they are looking for. Dailymotion will struggle in this arena because they do not have a major search engine backing their efforts for search results.
So what makes Dailymotion different than YouTube? Faster and better internationalization. YouTube was very slow to do this and because of that, failed to capture that part of the international market. Since it was there for the taking, Dailymotion started up and took it.
Now it’s the fight to see who keeps it and masters the market.
