Gmail Tips: Gmail+

As you may have noticed, I’ve started a little collection of “series” articles where I will write about a specific topic. Such as SEO Tips or the Firefox Extension Reviews. So here’s the start of the Gmail Tips series.

This tip is focused on your e-mail address specifically.

There is an easy way to organize your e-mails coming into your Gmail inbox without even using filters. You can use the plus sign (+) such as myemail+address@gmail.com, and it will still go to your inbox. How on earth could this be useful? Simple. If you have all your e-mails still going to your inbox but they are separated by various addresses, you can sort a lot more easily and you might be able to track down companies selling your e-mail address.

For example, lets say I’m shopping at TigerDirect.com. I create a new account, but I create it as myemail+tigerdirect@gmail.com. It will still go to my inbox, but I can easily target it and specifically look for e-mails coming in from TigerDirect. If TigerDirect were to ever sell my e-mail address or use it for marketing purposes other than what I allowed them (which they never will), I could easily see who it came from.

Below is an example of what I’m talking about:

Gmail Plus Sign

This is the first of what will be many Gmail tips. We can all thank Adam for this one (it’s an old tip, but a great one none the less!)
