San Francisco, Google, and Earthlink have all joined forces to create what quite possibly could be the largest wireless network in all of history.
Under the proposal, EarthLink — one of the nation’s largest Internet service providers — will build and maintain the wireless network. Google plans to buy bandwidth from EarthLink and then offer a free wireless service to residents.
Google, doing what it does best, wants to offer it for free. That free, however, will be paid by ads. Each browser will have advertising embedded in it to cover the costs of providing free WiFi. Personally, I wouldn’t care at all if there were ads in my browser for free WiFi — as long it was consistant WiFi.
This is a huge branch out for Google from their hometown WiFi network and it will expand the coverage for AdWords even more.
