Google Domain Trademarking

Cristian wrote a good article about this so I’ll dig a bit more into it.

Google is a very exclusive domain name. They want to protect their intellectual rights and therefore they are now banning AdSense publishers that have “google” in their top-level domain name or their second-level domain name.

When I first started ginside.com, I was very careful not to put Google in the domain name because I was afraid of things like this happening. I’ve started a couple Google-related websites before and I’ve always been careful not to put Google in the domain name. I did however, put “google” as a folder name to describe the site, which I believe is perfectly alright since it’s not a domain name.

Google has every right to be doing what they are doing and I believe they are doing what is proper. This is something they maybe should have done a long time ago. There are plenty of problem-sites in the AdWords database that use AdSense on the landing pages. Maybe this is the next big push to clean out that database and create a better defined userbase for everyone.
