Google Docs

Google Docs was launched recently. But what exactly does this mean? This means Microsoft just obtained a new and serious competitor to Office. While Microsoft Office has dominated the playing field for quite some time now, Google has stepped in and will become a major player in the “office” industry.

Right now, Google Docs is composed of spreadsheets and document writing. While the features aren’t that spectacular yet, it does present itself as something very useful. Did I mention it was free? Yeah, Google Docs is free. Instead of paying $300 or more for Microsoft Office, you can now just hop on, anywhere in the world, and write a document or do something fancy in the spreadsheets.

Everything within the Google Docs system is collaboratively ready as well. Which does mean that you can share, edit, delete, and do anything you want with someone else. Whether it’s a research project or just someone that’s sitting in the next cubicle over, Google Docs is making it easy to collaborate with others.

Something else very interesting though. Google bought Writely.com back in March 2006. Where does Writely.com go now? Yeah, you guessed it. It redirects you to http://docs.google.com now, which means Google simplistically bought them and now completely integrated the Writely platform into the Google Docs platform.
